As stated on
another of our web pages, the Multi-Club,
Sustainable Village Program was started in 2010 to enable a large
scale, humanitarian program addressing poverty, literacy, water, health,
housing, environment, micro-finance, etc. Starting in 2012, a larger
program that is supported by a comprehensive needs analysis will be
initiated and will include, among other initiatives, the Healthy Homes
Project to provide eco-friendly stoves and water filters to a large number
of homes.
|
Eco-stoves
are highly efficient, clean burning and environmentally friendly
cooking stoves of metal and ceramic construction. They reduce the
fuel, usually wood, requirements, smoke and toxins by as much as
90%. They also alleviate significant health and safety problems
associated with the traditional three-stone cooking fire. It is
estimated that nearly 2 million annual deaths are caused by dirty
wood cooking stoves in the developing world which also contributes
substantially to unsustainable deforestation and global warming.

Libertad, which is a short drive from San José Villanueva (you will
have to view a brief commercial clip at the beginning of the video). |

Water
Filters address the need for clean and safe drinking and cooking
water. Every year close to 1.7 million people, mainly young
children, in developing countries die from diarrhea caused by unsafe
drinking water. The local Rotary Club has been providing a simple,
inexpensive, low-tech ceramic water purifier design by Potters for
Peace. These bucket-shaped water filters effectively eliminate
99.88% of water-born disease agents.

Our Club has
set a goal to provide up to 3000 homes in El Salvador with a combined
eco-stove / water filter package. The stoves are approximately $65.00 each
and the filters are approximately $35.00 each, for a total package cost of
$100.00.
